MINNIE, mixed media & video installation,
2009
Open Space Uncurated - Creative Migration
Austrian Cultural Forum, NYC.

For the space where her video MINNIE would be presented, Petschnig imagined an environment for a specific viewer, one that would heighten the awkwardness and loneliness of the installation. In addition, she wanted to break with the sleek interior of the existing ACF gallery spaces by installing a very suburban and familiar room.

On two nights during the run of the show, she filmed her private performance inside, and had it project simultaneously onto the theater wall for a live audience. Petschnig’s new piece evolved around the subversive change of an individual into a fantasy persona, who is able to arouse, unsettle, entertain or embarrass. By turning the viewer into a voyeur, the artist explored the thin line between what is private and public.
